Candy match-3 on a board that gets eaten

Match Siege

A match-3 where the board itself is the battlefield. Blight eats cells inward from the edges, and matching pushes it back. A blighted cell is an obstacle, not a block: it never matches, never falls, and never refills. Before it spreads it telegraphs, and including that cell in a match blocks it.

Who it is for

People who enjoy deciding what to block more than matching itself

What it does

  • 8×10 board. Blight starts only at the edges, then spreads to neighbours — starting in the middle would leave no direction to defend
  • The cell count is 8×10 on every device; only the cell size grows to fit the screen. If a taller phone got extra rows, neither the leaderboard nor the daily run would mean anything
  • A cell is telegraphed 2.4 seconds before it turns. Matching it cancels the spread, so the warning is part of play rather than a fairness device
  • Clearing next to blight peels one layer off it. That is your only attack
  • Blighted cells block gravity, splitting a column into sections. Blocks above cannot fall past them
  • Four in a row makes a line block, an L or T crossing makes a bomb, five in a row makes a colour bomb — and they stay on the board
  • Anything inside a bomb's blast is destroyed regardless of how strong it is
  • Chains of three or more strip the strongest blight one layer per step
  • Seven event types fire on a timer. A new one unlocks as the wave count rises
  • The timer is your life. You lose when it runs out or when fewer than 32 cells remain usable — that threshold moved with the board, because adding cells and leaving it alone quietly guts the difficulty
  • Five stars to start, one back every five minutes. Bonus stars from watching an ad have no cap
  • Three item slots — a hammer (destroys one cell, or peels one layer of blight), a shuffle and a +5 seconds. One arrives on a wave clear and on a chain of exactly five
  • Music follows the state across three tracks: it darkens when time is short or blight is winning
  • Set a nickname and your score goes to an online board
  • Zero external assets. Candies, blight, fourteen sound effects and three music tracks are all generated in code

Where it is going

The loop, the blight, specials, waves, sound, events and the leaderboard are all in. The art was replaced wholesale — dark cut gems became bright candy with white outlines, faces and soft gloss, and the same rules suddenly read much lighter.

It also runs on Android now. Putting it on a real device is what surfaced two defects a desktop screenshot could never show: every Korean glyph was missing, and audio killed the app within twenty seconds while my verification ran muted.

What it needs next is not code. Nobody has played it long enough to say whether the event interval, the length of a wave, or the point where blight becomes too much are right.

The board grew from 8×8 to 8×10 after someone said it looked empty on a tall phone. My first answer was that extra rows would make the leaderboard unfair — but the thing to object to was never more rows, it was rows differing per device. Fixing the count at 8×10 and letting only the cell size follow the screen keeps the game identical everywhere. The lose threshold moved with it, because adding cells and leaving that number alone quietly collapses the difficulty.

Before you play

  • Still in development — rules and numbers change often
  • Click a block then an adjacent one, or drag. R restarts
  • There is sound. Browsers only allow it after your first input
  • Best score and stars are stored in this browser only
  • The Android app is in closed testing and carries a bottom banner ad. The browser version has neither
  • Leaderboard scores are reported by the client; the server only rejects values that do not add up
